About the event

Cities are thickly inhabited by memories. The process of the city development has been inscribed into the urban landscape: the renovation of an old building, the launch of a new railway, the creation of a green space, and the operation of an innovative public service……

To celebrate the 10th year of the Guangzhou Award, we called for photos under the theme of “Growing with the cities”and received more than 490 pieces from all over the world that show the infrastructure construction, changes and development, folk culture, and citizens’ daily life of global cities.

In collaboration with renowned photographers and representatives of the international organizations, we carefully selected photos from all submissions for our exhibitions online and offline.

Macau is an amazing city that looks like a God-made artwork by accidentally tipping over a palette. It is surprising that the city is not just black, white and grey, but an amazing mixture of red, yellow, blue, and green…any color you can think of.

Kaban is a lake system located within Kazan’s city boundaries. It consists of three lakes — Lower Kaban, Middle Kaban and Upper Kaban extending from north to south and connected via channels. They are the largest in Tatarstan. The lakes have a historical background and are a natural monument. Many historical legends are connected with them, one of which says there are treasures hidden in the lakebed silt. Such myths and legends form the cultural code of the city.

Regular shipping traffic was established between the rise of Bulak in Lower Kaban and the townhouses of Farther Kaban. Over time the shipping service has lost its importance for transportation and navigation which ceased to exist, but the aquatic area of Kaban is still used as a rowing channel by multiple sporting societies located on the lakesides.

New promenade around Lake Nizhny Kaban which improvement began in 2018 and ended in 2021 nevertheless its recent appearance has already become a favorite place for locals and tourists. It is modern and comfortable, suitable for people with disabilities. The total length of The Walking area paths is approximately 6 km. Around the lake you can slowly walk along convenient bridges and passages, sit down to relax on the benches, cook meat in the barbecue area.

In summer, catamarans and boats are rented on the lake. Sometimes various city events are held here, and in the evening part of the embankment in the area of the academic theater is effectively illuminated with colorful lights.

1.The water route

Location: El Salto, Jalisco; Mexico.

Introduction of the photo:

Floods are a recurrent problem in urbanized cities, derived from little or no planning and knowledge about the hydrological processes of the areas where human settlements are constructed. In this tour with Imeplan's Flood Working Group, the adequacy of the actions taken by the municipality for flood risk prevention and attention were evaluated. The area where the members of the Working Group are located is part of the infrastructure implemented to promote the conduction of rainwater runoff in high areas and direct it towards regulating vessels to avoid saturation of the drainage infrastructure in torrential rain.

2. Title: The water gives, and the water takes away (El agua da, el agua quita)

Location: El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico.

Introduction of the photo:

Human buildings in the higher areas of a terrain enjoy a lower risk before a flood, due to the topographic characteristics, being the lower areas where the greatest amount of water is concentrated during a rainfall and therefore the greatest risk. The infrastructure shown in the image is part of the actions taken in the municipality of El Salto to cushion the force and speed with which rain naturally slides down the slope.

Road System Modernization

Kazan is changing its road system a lot, the process of renovation and construction has started in 2010’s and still continues. For the recent years new bridges, highways and tramways were built. Due to the big events held in Kazan such as World Universiade in 2013, World Aquatics Championship in 2015, Confederations and World Cups in 2017 and 2018, new road structures were built to help relieve the traffic that increases from year to year. As it reflected on the photos Kazan pays a lot of attention on its road system and works hard on its beautification.

On the 2nd photo our Bulak river is represented during the winter time, new lights add more beauty to the bridges crossing the river. In addition, it is possible to see on this photo that even small roads include dedicated bus lanes for better passengers transportation.

New road (on the 1st photo) that is located in front of the new complex near Kazanka river is located in such a way that passing through it you can see the main sights of Kazan.

In Kazan we appreciate trams, as it represented on the 3rd photo, wide roads include tram lines in their center. Kazan has the largest tram route in whole Russia with its length 34 kilometers so paths pass through the entire city helping people to get where they need with comfort and speed. Kazan is still working on the building of new roads that definitely will shrink transportation time and split traffic flows to avoid traffic jams.

Qingping Market

The production of Chinese Proprietary Medicines (CPM) in Guangdong has a history of over 1,300 years. Guangzhou's long-standing position as a trading centre has given rise to many century-old pharmaceutical companies, many of which developed and expanded in the old markets along Qingping Road.

Cantonese are obsessed with soups and they usually use herbs as one of its ingredient, most of which are bought from the Qingping Chinese herbal market. As a native Cantonese, most of my knowledge of herbs comes from the soups my elders made, and from the Qingping Market where I used to hang out with my mother when I was a child. Nowadays, the market is different from what it used to be, but the atmosphere of the market is maintained. Almost everyone in Guangzhou is good at making soup and all have abundant knowledge about soup. “Wong Lo Kat” herbal tea has overtaken Coca-Cola to become the beverage bestseller in China. Some say that the taste of Guangzhou is the herbal fragrance of soup, just like the perfume of Paris, the curry of Mumbai and the tequila of Mexico City. If you want to savour the rich layers of this city's flavour, take a trip to Qingping Market.

The Kazan Family Centre

Title: The Kazan Family Centre

The Kazan Family Centre is a new wedding palace built on the bank of Kazanka River in 2013. Construction began in 2012 from building of the artificial peninsula, which is located on the right bank of the Kazanka River at the end of the Kremlin dam.

The origin of the name "Kazan" is directly associated with the Turkic word "kazan”. Which means a large cauldron in which food is cooked in the countries of Central Asia. It is also called "Chasha". It symbolizes the multinational Tatar land, where everyone lives together and respects family values.

The double-story observation deck on the roof, 32 metres up, is a great place to see the city and truly feel its scale.  A multi-level green lawn stretches across the front of the centre, with benches where you can sit and enjoy the view. In 2016 a sculptural composition "On I Ona" ("He and She" in Russian) by Dasha Namdakova was erected here. A pair of zilants (city symbols), leopards (symbols of the republic) and their cubs stand guard over family values, embodying the fidelity and strength of marriage ties. In the evening, the building lights up with red lights: creating a feeling of burning, everlasting love.

Back to 2018, I was in Guangzhou for a business trip. At early evening, after work, I went to the Shamian Park, which attracts many visitors every day to take photos and have fun. In the corner of the park, where people come and go, there was a white-haired lady with a piece of newspaper in her hand, reading it intently as if no one were watching. The crutches she kept by her side shew that she can no longer move like a youth, but she was still concerned with current affairs and national issues, which impressed me a lot! So, I pressed the shutter and took this photo. I feel that she shows the spirit of Guangzhou -- a city that is constantly changing and never be left behind! People in Guangzhou keep learning new things regardless of their age, and pass such spirit from generation to generation. I visit Guangzhou every year and witness its growth.
