In 2012, the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) was co-hosted by the World Organization of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis) and the City of Guangzhou. 

The Award has been recognizing cities for their outstanding innovation practices, while promoting sustainable urban development globally. A totalof 1,635 initiatives from 653 cities across 101 countries and regions have been received throughout six successful cycles.

Earning widespread endorsement and support from international organizations such as the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, the Award has emerged as a vital global platform for the better implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda at the local level.

Learning From the 6th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation presents 15 exemplary initiatives shortlisted from the 6th Guangzhou Award, which not only represent the latest trends in global urban innovation but also demonstrate the transformative power of urban innovation. 

From leveraging high-tech solutions and artificial intelligence in urban governance to fostering social inclusion and environmental sustainability, these innovative practices vividly showcase how cities are actively addressing complex global challenges with resilience, creativity, and a strong commitment to leaving no one behind. 

Notably, these projects underline a people-oriented development philosophy, prioritize people’s well-being, promote inclusive development of marginalized communities, and strive for harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Together, they offer valuable experiences and insights for urban governance around the world.
