In a recent interview, Jordi Vaquer, secretary-general of the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis), highlighted China's success in rapid and planned urbanization as a model for sustainable development and people’s well-being.

Metropolis, a global platform for exchanging experiences and sharing resources among large cities, aims to address urban challenges and promote sustainable development. Vaquer praised Guangzhou's innovative approach to urban governance, emphasizing the importance of learning from its achievements.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is falling significantly short of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Vaquer underscored the need for a balance between urban development, economic transformation, and people's well-being to ensure a better quality of life for billions of individuals. He called for a shift away from unsustainable models of economic growth and championed the restoration of harmony with nature.

While each city has its unique circumstances, there are common challenges in urban governance, including climate change, environmental issues, and imbalances in urbanization. Vaquer encouraged cities across the globe to come together, such as in Guangzhou, for effective solutions to these acute challenges.

Vaquer also pointed out the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a remarkable paradigm for promoting global sustainable development. Measures such as controlling excessive infrastructure construction, prioritizing environmental protection, and promoting circular economy initiatives within the region can contribute to a more sustainable and promising future.
