Abstract

This report is consisted of three chapters around the three transformative commitments highlighted in the 2022 Progress Report on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA): Social Inclusion and Ending Poverty, Inclusive Urban Prosperity and Opportunities, and Environmental Sustainability and Resilience. Each chapter selects shortlisted and award-winning finalists from the last two cycles of the Guangzhou Award (2018, 2020), covering the geographical regions of Africa, West Asia, North Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America. These initiatives have been selected to illustrate how local governments are turning ideas into action through practical and institutional innovations in governance, planning and financing practice, to achieve urban inclusion and resilience.

The report highlights that, regarding social inclusion and ending poverty, citizen engagement and participatory governance effectively contribute to community resilience and social inclusion. With regard to inclusive urban prosperity and opportunity, transformative economic models start with cities and regions, where decent work and inclusive urban growth could be promoted by circular economy and multi-sectoral cooperation. In terms of environmental sustainability and resilience, bottom-up and top-down inter-governmental dialogue and local capacity building are required to achieve desired outcomes and combining environmental sustainability with measurable benefits is an important step in driving sustainable change.
